The group comes together again to talk about the Timber Industry in Garfield County and the effect that tighter regulations on the forest had on the surrounding local economies. There are people who oppose the growth of a coalmine in the area and how the loss of future mining would also negatively impact the area. Instead of shutting out jobs in mining and timber it might be more beneficial to have those opportunities and to have a plan to reclaim those areas after the resources have been extracted.
In this section the group talk about the tourist opportunities that were created by the monument and the possibilities that may exist for the county. One of the major frustrations of the county is that there isn’t more access onto the monument because the area is so remote and rugged.
Today we sit down with the Garfield County Commission to talk about the effects that the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument has had on Garfield County. Before the monument, there were opportunities for oil and gas development but designation put an end to those projects. The grazers in area have also had challenges because they aren’t able to drop water tanks on the monument.
