God Bless America _ Salute to Utah Law Enforcement

— Several Utah County Commissioners joined forces to organize an event to honor, pay respect, and pledge continued support for law enforcement. “Utah’s Salute to Law and Order” will be held January 29th at 12:00 p.m. at the Utah State Capitol.

Iron County Utah Commissioner Dale Brinkerhoff will offer the event welcome. The event will feature speeches by Utah’s Lt. Governor Spencer Cox, Utah’s Attorney General Sean Reyes, Salt Lake County Utah Mayor Ben McAdams, and Beaver County Utah Commissioner Mark Whitney. Iron County Utah Commissioner David Miller will lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Utah National Guard will present the colors and play the instrumental piece Taps. Utah State Senator Karen Mayne will offer the invocation. Utah State Senator Evan Vickers will offer the Benediction. Sgt. Spencer Cannon will be singing the National Anthem, and Kailey Gilbert will be singing God Bless America. Spouses from four fallen Utah Officers will also have the opportunity to address the audience; These individuals are Nannette, wife of Sgt. Cory Wride, Utah County, Shante, wife of Sgt. Derek Johnson, Draper City, Kristie, wife of Trooper Aaron Beesley, UHP, Erin, wife of Officer Jared Francom, Ogden City, and Shawna, wife of Deputy Brian Harris, Kane County.

Iron County Utah Commissioner Dale Brinkerhoff who originated the idea of a “tribute day to law enforcement” stated, “I’m tired of the news media focusing on a few select situations involving law enforcement and painting all of law enforcement with that brush.” Continuing on Commissioner Brinkerhoff said, “We need to remember each and every day nearly 1 Million officers put their lives on the line to keep citizens across this nation safe, sometimes we forget the thousands of good things these people do.” Beaver County Utah Commissioner Mark Whitney stated, “We have thousands of law enforcement personnel that are great and wonderful people, sometimes the profession gets a raw deal in the media, I think it’s time we told them thanks.” Piute County Utah Commissioner Darin Bushman stated, “These people work in a job that most wouldn’t want nor would they have the courage to do, yet many are quick to second guess them and criticize their actions, I for one am grateful for each and everyone of them that work everyday to keep us safe and ensure our welfare.” Iron County Commissioner David Miller said, “It is time to salute our great American heritage of self government, law and order and the many men and women who serve our communities, that may find themselves in harms way, for our benefit. I am grateful everyday for these civil servants.”

The Salute to Law and Order will be held in the Hall of Governors at the Utah State Capitol Building. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of bus transportation to the Capitol, as parking is extremely limited. Participants can signup for event updates at the event website http://utahsalute.com. Members of the press are encouraged to attend, seating will be provided during the program.

Funding Future Transportation in Utah

In this video we meet with representatives from the Utah Legislature and the Utah Association of Counties to discuss the necessity of creating more revenue for transportation in Utah.

With an $11.3 Billion Dollar shortfall between today and 2040, which calculates out to an additional $400 Million dollars of revenue per year for transportation funding there is no doubt that Utahans will have to pay more for transportation in the years to come.

We will discuss the situation and the options that are on the table this legislative session.

If you would like more information on this issue please visit:

You can read their plan here:

Livestock Grazing Amendments on the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

We’ve all had plans fall apart and it very well could be caused by things outside of our control. I think that is something that we can all agree on particularly with an issue as contentious as grazing on public lands.

This week on the County Seat we will take a look at the current state of the planning amendment process taking place on the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument involving livestock grazing. This may be one of the most challenging plans to develop because of a number of factors. You will want to watch our story:
http://youtu.be/e8okmWFhlkQ?t=44s
for the background and take a look at the preliminary alternatives that the BLM will be looking into:
http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/grand_staircase-escalante/planning0/livestock_grazing/eis_preliminary_draft.html

The comment period is open until the 20th of January, 2015.

Our guests this week:

David deRoulhac, Grand Canyon Trust
Matt Betenson, Assistant Monument Manager, Grand Staircase Escalante
Dell LeFevre, Rancher and Garfield County Commissioner

The panel will talk about the planning process and what has been done to make the process as open to the public as possible. That isn’t to say their isn’t some skepticism.

And that’s what I was referring to in the opening remarks of this email. There is still what I would describe as a mistrust among some of the parties. My observation is that it has little to nothing to do with any of the people involved. I think it has more to do with the constant legal challenges and litigation that surround a number of issues that we tackle on the program. The crux of the issue is that the real problems are never worked out with any finality.

For example there was the much celebrated compromise in the Uintah Basin involving Penstemon:
http://www.ubmedia.biz/vernal/opinion/letters_to_editor/article_0b1469f4-480e-11e4-add6-3b5735373ca7.html

and then this week we see a challenge to the previous agreement:
http://www.sltrib.com/news/2007428-155/dispute-over-utahs-oil-shale-flowers

Now that is the system at work but I think that these constant challenges make it hard to work together in good faith.

Okay I’ll get off my soapbox. Thank you for reading this far.
