Derek Dowsett is the Producer of the County Seat. Now entering his 11th season of the program, he has received what he considers a "Crash Course" in County Government.

This week’s show focuses on the county public works department. The types of services that are offered by county public works differ across the state, but the goal is the same where ever you are. That goal is to provide the services and required maintenance that are a major part of our modern lives. This includes roads, garbage pickup, fire departments, ambulance, flood control, snow removal, and even more unique services such as power generation, internet, and weed control.

Salt Lake County is changing the structure of its public works department in order to provide services more efficiently. Salt Lake County is the most populous county in Utah and is made up of 16 cities, 6 townships and a number of community councils. The challenge is providing the same level of service county-wide.

Chad Booth sits down with Russ Wall, the new public works director for Salt Lake County and Patrick Leary, the Township Executive for unincorporated Salt Lake County to find out how two heads are better than one.
