If you are unable to afford an attorney for your defense in a criminal lawsuit one will be provided by the courts. Indigent defense is a service that the counties have been charged with in the state of Utah. It can be a burden for the counties to provide indigent defense especially in rural counties. The worry of organizations like the ACLU is that people are not getting the best defense because of the lack of funding. Counties on the other hand stress that while it is a burden on the county to provide the service, they are still able to provide a good defense.

Our roundtable focuses on some of the problems with the current indigent defense system. All 29 counties are providing a good defense, but it is a struggle to provide the funding. The counties are working to find ways to improve the system of indigent defense.
