Segment 1: Elected Officials, S2 EP42 part 1

The County Clerk is the chief election officer for the county. They are charged with putting on all Federal, State, and County Elections. This requires making sure that all the required polling works, voting machines, and supplies are ready for voters. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that voting happens and that each vote is counted and applied accurately.

 

Segment 2: Elected Officials, S2 EP42 part 2

We begin out episode on county elected officials by looking at the officers who are responsible for assessing and collecting property taxes. This involves keeping a pure record of all real property in the county, assessing a "fair market value", and having the appropriate checks and balances in place to allow for fair and accurate taxation.

 

Segment 3: Elected Officials, S2 EP42 part 3

The county sheriff is responsible for providing public safety to the citizens of a county. This goes way beyond simply arresting the bad guys. The county attorney is charged with prosecuting crime within the county and serving as counsel to the county in all legal matters.

 

Segment 4: Elected Officials, S2 EP42 part 4

The legislative branch of county government is made up of a 3 member commission or a 5 to 9 member council. In the commission form of government the elected officials have both legislative and executive powers, while in the council form an elected mayor or appointed county executive takes care of the executive functions. The county clerk is the record keeper of all of the meetings of the commission or council;
along with issuing marriage licenses, passports, and running elections.
