Season 1 Episodes

Segment 1: School Institutional Trust Lands Administration

Today we're going to talk about the School Institutional Trust Lands Administration. You may have seen the commercials on the show and wondered what they have to do with schools. SITLA is an organization that manages the State Trust Lands that were granted to Utah at statehood to generate money for Utah's School Kids. How do they make money for schools with State Property? Terry Wood has the story.

Segment 2: Wild and Scenic Rivers

We are now going to take a look at the topic of wild and scenic rivers. It is a special designation that goes along with a stretch of river to protect the natural flow of that river. We only have one stretch of wild and scenic river that has been designated on the Virgin RIver, and that was part of the Washington County land use bill that was passed by congress a couple of years ago. But more may be on the way. What are they? How do they work?

Segment 3: Wild and Scenic River Designations Round Table Pt. 1

Chad Booth discusses Wild and Scenic River designations with Bunny Sterin, the National Landscape Conservation System Lead for the BLM of Utah, John Harja the Director of the Governor's Public Lands Office and Commissioner Mike McKee from the Uinta County. The panel discusses the purpose of a Wild and Scenic River designation, and the local government officials talk about the problems that such a restrictive designation means for the State and Counties.

Segment 4: Wild and Scenic River Designations Round Table Pt. 2

The panel wraps up their discussion on Wild and Scenic River Designations in Utah. They do provide protection of the free-flowing nature of rivers with extraordinarily remarkable values such as: clean water; outstanding recreation; fisheries; and riparian areas. This designation protects the river for all time for future generations in perpetuity. The problem that local government points out is that it takes away some of the state's right to the water, and creates federal water rights.
