Season 1 Episodes

Segment 1: Illegal Dumping on SITLA Land

The area west of Utah lake is a popular recreation area for people from the Wasatch Front. On a typical weekend you will find 1,000 people out target shooting. The amount of people using the area has caused some real management problems for the BLM and SITLA. There are some simple things that people can do that will help restore the area.

Segment 2: City and County Services

The larger cities in Utah typically handle most of the services that we enjoy as residents of that community. There are still regional services that are handled at the county level. If you live in unincorporated Salt Lake County your fire and police services may be handled by Unified Police or Unified Fire or that may be a city service. Some cities may contract with the county for services such as Holladay City. As you move out to some of the more rural areas the county's may be the primary service provider. It all depends on the size of a community and the kinds of services that the residents desire. It makes it hard to understand who is providing what service to you. A new piece of legislation is in the works to help define what services should be provided by the county and what level. But what kinds of services do cities and counties provide anyway? Terry Wood has the story.

Segment 3: City and County Services: Round Table Pt. 1

Chad Booth sits down with Brent Gardner, Utah Association of Counties; Lincoln Shurtz, Dir. Gov. Affairs Utah League of Cities and Towns; and Michael Jensen, Salt Lake County Council and head of Unified Fire Authority to talk about a potential bill that defines what a county service is.

Segment 4: City and County Services: Round Table Pt. 2

The panel wraps up the discussion on city and county services. The hope is to create a baseline service provided by the county and then allowing cities to offer a higher level of that service. The challenge is creating a level of service that even smaller counties are able to offer. The main goal is holding down the cost of government and finding ways to make tax dollars go further.
