Season 1 Episodes

Segment 1: Property Tax Exemptions

In a couple of months you are going to get a notice from your county assessor. Most people who have escrow that automatically collect for their property tax don't pay much attention to that notice, but for those who have to pay that bill come November, they pay a lot of attention. It can be a very frustrating process and it becomes even more frustrating when you look at the difference you pay from one year to the next. The property tax burden shifts up and down because the taxes collected are related to the money that the county needs in order to fulfill its duties. The climbing property values of the last decade caused some grief for those who were on a fixed income that owned a home and watched the value of the property appreciate and inflate the property tax. There are some exemptions that are available to certain segments of the population to keep them from being taxed out of their home, Terry Wood has that story. As is the case with exemptions and with a challenging assessed value, the time to act to adjust your upcoming property taxes is not in November when you go to pay it, the time to do it is right in July after you've received your notice. Then their process will allow you the ability to appeal or apply for an exemption and present your case, but if you wait until it's due, it's too late and you'll have to pay the tax.
