Derek Dowsett is the Producer of the County Seat. Now entering his 11th season of the program, he has received what he considers a "Crash Course" in County Government.

There is an opioid epidemic in rural areas – including here in Utah. Cases of addiction can begin as innocently as opioid prescription for a sports injury, which then escalates to a dependency. There are so many dependent individuals that Carbon County Sheriff, Jeff Wood, says that he doesn’t think there is a single family in Carbon County that has not been affected by this crisis in one way or another.

High rates of opioid dependency have consequences besides the detriment to the lives of those involved – they also correlate with crime rates. Carbon county estimates that around 80% of crimes in their county are drug related. This is an immense problem that many in the area are working around the clock to combat. In this episode of The County Seat, we discuss the causes of this issue and what needs to happen moving forward.
