Derek Dowsett is the Producer of the County Seat. Now entering his 11th season of the program, he has received what he considers a "Crash Course" in County Government.

any time you take away the
money from the federal government
who wants it to spend it the way they
think they should spend it the more
we can do that the better I like it I
think we are better off to keep the
money at home and spending it our
ways the way we think that are our
priorities and we are more efficient
and we are more effective in doing
that than giving it to the federal
government I hope they spend it right
because most of us believe they have
not been doing that, other than
national defense some of the
department of commerce issues
maybe some environmental issues
that cross over state lines I prefer to
keep all the money at home and let
us decide what is in our best interest
of our states. That is really the
concept of federalism. The rolls of
the federal government James
Madison said had to do with defined
powers that were defined and few.
The powers given to the states were
indefinite and many. We have this
backwards in how it’s spent. The
federal budgets are more than the
combined budgets of all the 50
states. That seems a little bit
backwards to me so if we can keep
money at home I think we will spend
the money more effectively and more
efficiently and the tax payers will be
served better and we will have better
programs for less money.
