Derek Dowsett is the Producer of the County Seat. Now entering his 11th season of the program, he has received what he considers a "Crash Course" in County Government.

Let’s face it creating public policy is a little bit messy and sometimes you end up with some bumps and bruises along the way. Kind of like when you borrowed mom and dad’s car when you were 16 and drug it down the side of a pole. Someone has to pull out those dents and make things all shiny and new. The body shop takes care of the car but who takes care of policy decisions that take place in Washington DC?

Thousands of bills flow through the Congress each year in Washington DC (or at least they try to) Bills with varying degrees of importance from the naming of post offices to healthcare reform. Sooner or later those decisions will have an impact on our lives.

435 Representatives and 100 Senators in the congress, The President , Vice President, and 15 cabinet members in the executive branch, and so on; there’s a lot of people to pay attention to back in Washington DC.

The juiciest of stories are covered by the media, but as far as the day to day operations it’s hard to imagine how on earth anything gets done.

It’s something I wonder about from time to time and it’s an issue for every state and over 3,000 counties that make up what we lovingly refer to as the government. So how exactly do you make your voice heard, well it helps to have a lot of voices.

This week on the County Seat we will be taking a look at the National Association of Counties. This association represents the interest of all 3,069 counties that make up the United States back in Washington DC; among other things.

Chad Booth will sit down with: Gordan Topham, Sevier County Commissioner; Kerry Gibson, Weber County Commissioner; Matt Bell, Weber County Commissioner; to discuss how UTAH fits into the organization. You’ll find out how UTAH’s counties are leading the national discussion on important national issues. There are some great benefits to leading the discussion that can be felt all the way down at the local level.
